Thoughts and observations on life around me...
Tuesday, November 1, 2011
It's been ages since I last wrote. I've had the very best of intentions of course, but time seems to be scarce. I have also wanted to re-organise the blog and being on leave this week has given me the opportunity I needed to play around. What do you think? I'm pleased with the result but stil have lots to learn! This morning is a beautiful Spring day and the gardens around me are just divine. Every morning I can smell roses, jasmine, lilacs and the old fashioned azaleas outside my windows bring back memories of childhood and my dad's gardening skills. Dad was a gentle man, generally, but gardening seemed to bring out his aggression and need to dominate. It was fashionable in his day to talk to your plants, it would nurture and encourage lush growth, apparently. I wondered about that encouragement for years as my dad stood in the garden announcing regularly "I put you in and I can easily take you out"! I think the plants knew it was 90% bluff, none of the offenders were ever removed, but my dad was King in his garden! I wish I had some of his control, especially in my small vege and herb patch. The wild rabbits, so cute when they were babies, have now grown into adulthood, mainly by eating my veges! With dad's harsh words in mind and channeling my inner Mr McGregor, I intend having words wirth those little furries this afternoon. I'm happy to share, but I want half left for me! Wish me luck...

April
I left Sydney 22 years ago but there are still plenty of times that I really miss it. I have been extremely lucky over the years and have avoided any major traffic jams when I visit. I know... how does this happen? Anyway, just as I was having a "Sydney" moment on Saturday morning, I realised how lucky I am to live where I do.
I watched the lorikeets playing in the birdbath, the magpies and currawongs digging in the garden and a group of very loud, juvenile white cockatoos swooping and diving through the trees. I'm not so happy about sharing my small veggie patch with the baby rabbits and my roof with a tango dancing possum but hey... I know I'm alive!

So much of my time seems to revolve around food, drooling over new recipes, talking about it, cooking it and of course, eating it. It seems then, to include at least one favourite recipe or cooking tip every month. So here goes... I have some wonderful apples on the trees at home - don't ask me their names, just red and green juicy sweet apples. I love stewed apples and winter is fast approaching (I'm pretending that it's still summer though) so here's my apple recipe. Apples, peeled, cored and sliced as you like them, peeled and finely sliced fresh ginger, lemon rind, remove the pith. Sugar to taste and cook with a small amount of water until they start to fall apart. The ginger and lemon rind will melt into the apples and it's delicious!
